The new movie is technically a prequel to the 1968 Planet of the Apes however, it ignores the various sequels and spin-offs (including a TV series) that derived from that property. It’s excellent blockbuster fodder with added not-so-subtle political subtexts that succeeds at almost every level. Trailers for Rise of the Planet of the Apes make it appear that this is predominantly a rampaging man-vs.-ape war movie. It is not what could be fairly called a bad movie, but neither is it. If it lasts 40 days in theaters, that would be amazing. This evening I sat down and gave it that shot. Nothing in Rise of the Planet of the Apes will last 40 years. I scoffed at the scores of folk telling me that it was fucking awesome and that I should fucking get over myself and give it a shot. Out of all the classic franchises, which would you pick to reboot? The correct answer is, of course, none of them.
